About Me

Hi! My name is Jolene but everyone just calls me Jo. I am a married 58, almost 59 year old woman living in North Central Iowa.

About three years ago my husband took early retirement from his over the road truck driving job due to being in stage four kidney failure. Because of his early retirement our income was cut by 2/3! Suddenly we found ourselves living below the poverty line! We had to make changes immediately and that is what this blog is all about – the steps we have taken or are currently working on to cut our expenses, the lessons we have learned and the resources we have discovered to help us stay afloat.

I will admit this is a blog about our household, so two older adults with no children (unless you count our fur babies – then we have two, one indoor, lovingly known as Oranges and one stray outdoor, AKA: Crusty, who adopted us a few years back.) I do think that most of the information on our blog can easily be adjusted for larger families.

Now back to me :) I haven’t had a physical job in many many years – I get panic attacks in public, am hardly able to walk after an accident that caused my kneecap to fall and I’m an insomniac night owl with restless legs – but I have always kept busy. I tried my hand at writing and publishing nonfiction books back in the 2010’s, I have taken some college courses and I spent time in my husband’s truck. And yes if you are wondering I have been to all the lowest 48 states at some point in my lifetime :)

Since my husband retired I have mostly been trying to learn how to survive, pay the bills and feed us as cheaply as possible. I help my husband when he is too tired or not feeling the best by driving him to doctor’s appointments and things of that nature. I also occasionally help my sister with my mom – IE: taking her to an appointment or doing cat chores for her when she is in the hospital.

A few months ago I started a new cheaper meal plan, then the previous one we had been using, that turned into a heck of a project that I plan to publish here for free when it is done.

Well that’s my life and a little bit of my story. I hope you enjoy my blog and even more so find it useful.

 💗 Jo

P.S. Sometimes I may come across as rude and I honestly don’t mean to. I’m just a straight shooter calling it like I see it so please don’t ever be offended by me and I apologize in advance. :) Thanks
